OSFC students reach TeenTech award finals for 5th consecutive year
We are delighted that our team that made it through to the final were presented with the ‘think big think bold award’, Science tutor Briony Setterfield-Price was awarded a special teacher’s accolade for helping so many students engage with extracurricular science, and the college has also been awarded Gold status.
OSFC’s budding scientists have done it again! An innovative team of three Year 12 students, Olivia Porter, Dominic Sims and Saoirse Maguire, have made it to the finals of the TeenTech awards. The national STEM competition, established in 2012/13 for students in Years 12 and 13, helps students to see how they might apply science and technology to real world problems. Participation in the awards encourages students to develop their own ideas for making life better, simpler, safer or more fun in an imaginative and creative way. The amazing efforts and hard work of Olivia, Dominic and Saoirse, whilst working remotely via Zoom, has been rewarded by their project ‘Jellyfish Power’ being selected as a finalist in the Best Research Project category. We congratulate them on, and are very proud of, this huge achievement.
The group now turn their focus on honing their presentation skills, with the help of their Science tutor Briony Setterfield-Price, to prepare them for presenting to a panel of STEM experts later in June. The best projects will then go forward for judging at the TeenTech Awards Final ceremony, which will take place virtually this year, on Monday 29 June, where the winners will be announced and receive a prize of £1000.
TeenTech stated that the standard of work was outstanding this year; the judges were extremely impressed and had a very tough task deciding who to put through. They are particularly proud of all students who have taken part this year, given the additional pressures of working remotely to complete these projects.
We wish the team the very best of luck in the next stage of the competition!
