OSFC attend LEAF event
On Tuesday 25th June ten Year 12 students from OSFC’s Language Department attended the LEAF event at the Samuel Alexander Building at Manchester University. This has become a regular and popular fixture on our calendar of events within the department. Despite the rain students arrived for an early start. First on the agenda was an interesting presentation by university staff and current undergraduate students on what studying languages at this level involves. Then students went to the first of a series of their chosen workshops, some attended a session on beginning Japanese which, as Muhammad Ali (Year 12 French) said ” was good fun and practical”. Workshops on French Cinema, Italian (beginners level), Spanish, German and French Language Skills and Russian were also offered.
After a brief break students were given a presentation by Helen Buzdugan from the University Careers Service on careers for MFL graduates. This was most informative and the sheer breadth of opportunities was made clear. “Having a degree in a language is a key to unlock a door to a huge variety of international opportunities” was Helen’s key message.
After a tasty lunch provided by the university there followed sessions on Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies, Portuguese, German Cinema, and French and Spanish Language Skills. An optional tour of the university campus ended the day and students were able to visit buildings now bathed in sunshine.
John Page, Course Leader for French and German, said of the event “It was an excellent day providing all students regardless of their intended career paths with plenty to think about”
