Health Students Offered Places on Prestigious NW Ambulance Service Cadet Scheme
We are proud to have two students who have successfully secured places on the prestigious North West Ambulance Service Cadet Scheme. The scheme is a specialised work placement initiative for college students that offers hands-on experience in both patient transport and emergency services to prepare young people for careers within the NHS. Year 13 T Level Health student, Charlie, and Year 13 extended health and social care student, Zoya, both go out for one a day a week with ambulance crews. The placement aims to prepare students for roles such as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), paramedic science degrees, or careers in nursing.
Both Charlie and Zoya have really been enjoying their time shadowing paramedics so far:
The NWAS cadet scheme has been everything I ever dreamed of and I'm loving every second of it. This course is providing me with the first hand experience of what life working in an ambulance is like, to best prepare me for my future career goals. Everyday on the scheme has been different as no two jobs are the same and you never really know what you are being called to next. After OSFC, I hope to become a paramedic myself in order to live out this job role for the rest of my life
Charlie

This scheme has been amazing so far. It gives you a real insight into what life will actually be like once you qualify, which is such a good experience to have early on. I think the biggest thing I've gained is better people skills; seeing that everyone’s living situation is different has been a massive eye-opener and made me much more understanding. No two days with the ambulance team are ever the same, but the one constant is their professionalism. It’s taught me how important it is to stay calm and professional, no matter what state a patient is in. After OSFC, my plan is to study Paramedic Practice at university, or look into an EMT apprenticeship
Zoya
Curriculum Area Leader for Psychology and Health & Social Care, Ann-Marie Smethurst, is delighted for Charlie and Zoya:
We are incredibly proud of Charlie and Zoya for being accepted on this prestigious scheme; a first for the college. They have both really embraced their time on the scheme so far and are relishing the challenges and growth it is bringing them. This opportunity will give them both the chance to gain so much valuable experience that they can then take with them into their future paramedical science careers
