Where are they now?
Jack Monaghan
Jack came to OSFC from Mossley Hollins School in 2005. He was an outstanding student, who was described as a “mathematical actor”, and who left the College in 2007 with five A grades at A Level in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Drama & Theatre Arts.
Jack is now studying an MA in Natural Sciences at Cambridge University. He would like to pursue a career in acting after graduating, or complete a research assistantship and progress onto a PhD.
Jack says: “I would definitely recommend OSFC to everyone. The College's main strength lies in the diverse array of academic, extracurricular and social opportunities for all students. This extensive provision enhances and adds real value to your core study programme. The Aim higher Oxbridge group was of real value to me as was taking part in the College’s production of Romeo and Juliet.”
Robert Moutrey
Having joined the College in 2005 from Mossley Hollins School, Robert always worked incredibly hard to achieve high standards. He displayed a true love and enthusiasm for music of all kinds, and left the College in 2007 with three A grades at A Level in Music, Fine Art and Drama & Theatre Arts and an A in AS Level Graphic Design.
Robert is currently at Leeds College of Music studying a BA (Honours) degree in Popular Music. After graduating, he hopes to do an MA in Music at Goldsmiths (The University of London).
Robert says: “Everything at OSFC is designed to ensure you achieve the very best you can. The support from tutors on an academic and personal level is outstanding. The facilities for drama are fantastic, and you have the opportunity to work within a real theatre environment. The resources and materials in the Art department are of the highest quality to ensure you can produce work of the highest standard.”
Zach Wolstenholme
A talented sportsman and gifted linguist, Zach came to OSFC in 2005 from Mossley Hollins School. Described as “a tremendous role model in every way”, he left College with four A grades at A Level in PE, Psychology, Biology and Spanish.
Zach is now at The University of Edinburgh studying an MA in Spanish and Portuguese. After finishing university, Zach is considering working for British Intelligence or in international interpretation.
Zach says: “OSFC was a life changing experience for me. The tutors were so supportive and passionate about their subjects, and it is at College that my true love for languages developed. I took full advantage of all the extracurricular opportunities and was a member of the Student Association. This was a great chance for me to organise fundraising events and take an active part in the welfare of OSFC students.”
Helen Mooney
As an active and wholehearted participant in all lessons, Helen, who came from Saddleworth School in 2002 “wowed” all her subject tutors. Her performance at College was outstanding and she achieved three A grades at A Level in French, English Literature and Fine Art, as well as an A grade in Human Biology and a B grade in Critical Thinking at AS Level.
In 2005, Helen went to The University of Durham where she achieved a first class honours degree in English Literature. Helen is currently studying the Graduate Diploma in Law at BBP Law School in Manchester, and will start working for Addleshaw Goddard in 2010.
Helen says: “I did consider other nearby sixth form colleges, but after coming to the open day, I just knew OSFC was the right place for me. There was a great feel to the College and the facilities were fantastic. The tutors were so helpful and friendly, and genuinely keen for me to succeed. The teaching was outstanding, and high calibre students were given every opportunity to fulfil their full potential. Studying at OSFC thoroughly prepared me to study independently at university and take on more challenging texts.”
Holly Bryson
Holly threw herself into College life from day one of her arrival from Saddleworth School in 2006. A committed, caring and intelligent student, Holly became the President of the Student Association and won the prestigious Governors’ Prize in 2008 for her admirable dedication to the College. Holly achieved two A grades in Law and French and a B grade in English Literature at A Level, as well as a C grade in AS Level Drama & Theatre Arts.
Holly is now at The University of Leeds studying a BA (Honours) Degree in Broadcast Journalism.
Holly says: “The College has a fantastic atmosphere and everyone is really friendly. The tutors are great, and genuinely respect students, as well as supporting and encouraging them to do their very best. The work at College is demanding, but the environment at OSFC means that you can work hard but still enjoy yourself and have fun! I feel very proud to have been to OSFC!
Arif Mohid
Determined and hard working, Arif came to OSFC in 2003 from The Radclyffe School. Arif was described as a “model student” who was always prepared to go that extra mile. His commitment to his subjects saw him achieve three A grades at A Level in Electronics, Maths and Chemistry and a C grade in Computing at AS Level.
Arif is currently studying an MEng in Aerospace Engineering at The University of Manchester.
Arif says: “The facilities are excellent at the College. You can always access a computer for personal study and the laboratories and equipment are state of the art. The tutors are really approachable and genuinely interested in helping you succeed.”
Lee Lindley
Focussed and motivated, Lee came to OSFC in 2004 from Breeze Hill School. His flair for Maths and Science was evident, and he excelled in all his subjects. Lee achieved four A grades at A Level in Chemistry, Maths, Biology and Psychology.
Lee is now at Cambridge University studying an MA in Natural Sciences. After graduating, he is planning to do a one year research assistantship followed by a PhD in Clinical Psychology.
Lee says: “…I chose OSFC because of its excellent reputation and the fact that it was the best college near me… I did the Aim Higher Psychology and Biology groups which were designed to stretch you beyond the core A Level syllabus….These gave me a really good grounding for my university degree course… There are so many opportunities at OFSC. I would recommend it to anyone!”
Chloe Stott
Chloe came to OSFC from Royton & Crompton School in 2005 with an incredible work ethic. The combination of her natural ability, determination and motivation led to astonishing exam results including 100% in the Physics exam. Chloe achieved four A grades in Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Physics at A Level.
Chloe is now at Cambridge University studying an MA Honours in Natural Sciences. Enthusiastic to share her passion for science, Chloe would like to become a Science Teacher.
Chloe says: “After visiting other colleges, I decided that OSFC was definitely the right place for me. The science facilities were excellent and the science tutors were all clearly passionate about their subjects. The teaching is outstanding, and the tutors are supportive and do everything to ensure you succeed and fulfil your potential. I found that the relaxed and adult environment motivated me to work even harder, and being encouraged to be more independent was a great preparation for university.”
