The Student Ambassadors

The student ambassadors at OSFC are a specially selected team of Year 13 students, who help to represent the College at various events, including Information Mornings and Taster Days. They have been handpicked to represent the College after a successful Year 12 and an application process and interview within College. The scheme has been running successfully for three years and the new ambassador team is now in place for 2011 to 2012.

Easily identified in their royal blue polo shirts, the ambassadors offer a warm welcome to pupils from our feeder schools and are able to share their experiences of college life. They also play a key role in reassuring new students as they make the transition from school to college.

Jack Schofield is a student ambassador who joined the Sixth Form College from North Chadderton School. He says,

‘I became a student ambassador because I feel that coming to Oldham Sixth Form College is one of the best decisions I ever made. I have had an amazing experience, so far, to the extent that I really look forward to coming in, not just to see friends, but to my lessons as well. I am committed to promoting the College and convincing more students to choose OSFC and enjoy a similar experience to the one I have had.’

Jack studies English Literature, English Language, History and Media Studies and would like to study
English Language with Linguistics at university in the hope of becoming a journalist or a speech therapist.

Student ambassadors are selected because they are good communicators, approachable and friendly and also dedicated and committed students, who help to create the positive atmosphere that OSFC is known for.

As well as being a rewarding role, the scheme offers the ambassadors a fantastic opportunity to develop their own interpersonal skills, enhance their organisational skills and increase their confidence – all which are vital for higher education and employment.

The feedback from previous ambassadors has shown that they truly enjoy the role and benefit from the experiences it brings.

Kimberley Glabeke was an ambassador from 2010 to 2011. She said of the experience, ‘I helped with Taster Days, careers events, Information Mornings and prize givings.   I got to meet prospective students and sometimes parents and tell them about my time at OSFC, while also promoting particular subjects and explaining programmes of study. I really grew in confidence as a result of my role. I now know that I can communicate well with people and that pupils felt I was approachable and reassuring. I also felt it was something very positive to include on my UCAS application. I would definitely recommend the role to anyone.’

Kim has gone on to study French at Salford University.
