The Student Ambassadors

Student Ambassadors

A record number of students applied to become part of Oldham Sixth Form College’s prestigious Student Ambassador Scheme this year. A staggering sixty-eight students put themselves forward to support the College’s School Liaison and Marketing Team in promoting the College and in providing help and guidance to prospective pupils. This overwhelming response is a true testament to the success of the scheme, which was established in 2008, and it confirms how students, not only feel proud to be part of OSFC, but want to actively encourage other pupils to become part of the OSFC experience.

“I applied to become a Student Ambassador because I felt I really wanted to give something back to the College. I enjoy College so much and I’m looking forward to encouraging more pupils to come here,” says Rumi Das, a former pupil of Oldham Academy North.

Feedback shows that the Student Ambassadors have a hugely positive impact on pupils and parents, and with the biggest team of ambassadors to date (55 students in total), it is exciting to know that more pupils than ever will benefit from meeting and working with these inspirational students. April Tsang, a former pupil from Hulme Grammar School for Girls, remembers how reassured she was by Student Ambassadors when she first visited the College and how this experience contributed to her own decision to become an ambassador; “I was very nervous coming to the Information Morning as I didn’t know anyone. The Ambassadors were so friendly and approachable which really helped me.”

Taking on the role also provides the students with an opportunity to enhance their communication, interpersonal and organisational skills as well as boosting their confidence; attributes that are increasingly vital for successful university applications. Cameron Smith, a former pupil of Newman College (Royton) is hoping to progress to Oxford University to study Biochemistry and he acknowledges the importance of taking part in schemes such as this, “It is a very rewarding role. I can help the College whilst developing my own skills.”

Since being appointed in May, this dynamic team has already been involved in over 10 College events, including the Year 10 Taster Days and the College’s 20th Anniversary Celebration, and the autumn term promises to be even busier!
