Maths Motivation Day 2009

The College hosted its first Maths Motivation Day on 18th November. Open to all year 12 AS Maths students and AS Statistics students, the event featured inspiring talks from three high profile speakers as well as celebratory videos.

The three speakers were Dr Mark Lewney, Dr Simone Marzani and Jake Meyer. Dr Lewney’s talk covered superstring theory and an 11 dimensional world and how this links in with the electric guitar and Quantum physics.

The second speaker, Dr Marzani, is based at Manchester University’s Particle Physics Lab. He talked about probability from the small to the large scale and the kind of work he does at the University.

The final speaker, Jake Meyer, is a motivational speaker who is prepared to say how Maths helps when climbing mountains. This is something he knows a lot about as he started climbing at just 12 years old and several years ago he broke the world record for being the youngest person to climb Everest!

The day was voted a huge success by both staff and students and hopefully will become an annual event.
