On Thursday 9th March, Oldham Sixth Form College held an inter-faith conference to promote discussion and understanding between some of the major faiths. The conference was open to all students and staff, and proved particularly helpful for those studying Religious Studies and Sociology at A Level. Representatives from 4 of the main religions (Islam, Christianity, Hinduism and Judaism) answered a range of questions posed by students. Topics included animal rights, women’s rights, attitudes towards members of the LGBT community, the growth and decline of religion, and how religious principles fit with the principles of the UK’s secular state.
The conference was positive and enlightening, and students left with a greater understanding of the similarities and differences between the major religions represented in our local area.
