A Summer of Science
Year 12 Science StudentsDuring their summer holidays, seven Year 12 science students had the chance to participate in the prestigious Nuffield Foundation's Science Bursary scheme. This national scheme offers opportunities for students to work alongside practising scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians to gain invaluable hands-on experience. There are a limited number of highly sought after places available every year, and the College was very fortunate to be offered seven of them.
The students (Jorden Senior, Sophie Rigney, Liam Ratcliffe, Halima Iqbal, Khairun Nessa, Joshua Brierley and Ben Pople) undertook 4-6 week projects in areas such as Biological and Life Sciences, Physics, Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry at the Universities of Manchester, Salford and Huddersfield. During their projects the students had the opportunity to work alongside eminent scientists providing them with an insight into the world of scientific research and development.
They will now be invited to apply for Gold CREST Awards by submitting scientific reports based on their project work.
Student Jorden Senior said, “I found that the Scheme allowed me to gain a good insight into the real world of Particle Physics and studying Physics at university. I would encourage any student hoping to pursue a career in scientific research to engage in a Nuffield Bursary if they’re lucky enough to have the chance.”
