F1 Arrives in Oldham

Richard Hopkirk and Students Richard Hopkirk during his visit

On a recent visit to OSFC Richard Hopkirk, a McLaren engineer, gave science and maths students and staff an exclusive and exciting insight into the world of Formula 1 racing. Richard, a Cambridge engineering graduate and Harvard post-graduate, was Lewis Hamilton's race team tactician for the 2007, 2008 and 2009 F1 seasons and now works on McLaren road cars at their headquarters in Surrey.

Richard wowed some 250 students and staff with a stunning, 'behind the scenes' exclusive look at how engineering, communication and team-work all combine to enable an F1 pit-stop to be completed  with such split-second timing and precision. After the presentation, Richard was inundated with questions from the audience, with students demonstrating both passion and knowledge about science and engineering and particularly topical issues such as energy efficiency and sustainability. Afterwards, Richard shared his undergraduate and postgraduate experiences of engineering and cutting edge scientific research with prospective Oxbridge engineering and science applicants.

Alan Matear, Assistant Principal, thanked Richard for a captivating and illuminating presentation and for giving the students an unique opportunity to experience first hand the world of Formula 1. " This has truly been an inspirational event which will undoubtedly stay with our students and encourage them towards future studies in science and engineering subjects at university."
