OSFC Science Students Engineer Their Way To Gold CREST Awards
OSFC Science Students Samuel Wilson, Jorden Senior and Lewis Newton with Sarah Anderson from Zetex DiodesOSFC Science students have successfully completed the Engineering Education Scheme (EES) which is a prestigious work experience scheme providing students an opportunity to get in-depth, hands on experience of engineering, design and research at a professional level.
The students were among teams from schools and colleges across the region participating in a six month project coordinated by the Engineering Development Trust (EDT).
In their project ‘Light Exclusion in a Wafer Probe Station’ OSFC students Jorden Senior, Lewis Newton and Samuel Wilson worked with Sarah Anderson from local Oldham company Zetex Diodes in solving a ‘real life’ engineering problem which will now save the company thousands of pounds annually.
During the six month project students gained valuable experience of problem solving, team working and project management. Additionally, students attended a series of residential workshops at universities across the region, and were able to demonstrate their scientific prowess and presentation skills at their Celebration and Assessment Day (CAD) hosted by Huddersfield University.
The students are now using their project work to apply for British Science Association CREST Awards at Gold Standard.
