Dark Tale is Dramatic Success

This year’s Drama Enrichment production was our take on Steven Berkoff’s Metamorphosis and, as always, the two public performances on 3rd and 4th March were highly successful.

Originally written by Franz Kafka, Metamorphosis is the tale of Gregor Samsa who awakes one morning to find himself transformed into a giant insect.  Berkoff’s adaptation is both innovative and original, using aspects of Dance and Physical Theatre.  Inspired by the films of Tim Burton, the College’s set and staging, in our purpose building Lecture and Performance Theatre,  were animatedly dark and abstract, perfectly capturing Berkoff’s menacing and sinister atmosphere.

Although the story’s concept is highly surreal, the play was chosen for this year’s production because of its touching and emotive themes of isolation and segregation, as seen through the eyes of Gregor Samsa, the outsider, as well as their devastating consequences - subjects which are universally pertinent and relevant to all young people.

Head of Drama Elizabeth Ramsay said “I’d like to congratulate all the students on their hard work and commitment to making both evenings such a success, whether they were performing or helping back stage.  This year, students had to deal with severe weather disrupting the rehearsal schedule so I’m delighted their efforts resulted in an excellent production”.
