Science finds the right balance at Sixth Form College
OSFC Students with Dr Pauline BalacDr Pauline Balac from The University of Huddersfield visited the College as a guest speaker on 10th March, to deliver the latest in a series of Science Lectures to a packed house.
The topic this time around was Homeostasis, the process by which the internal systems of the body maintain a balance, despite external conditions. Dr. Balac gave the lecture to over 300 Advanced level students as part of the Science Partnership between the two institutions - The University of Huddersfield is closely linked with our on-going plans to bring a Regional Science Centre to Oldham.
These plans gained a further boost earlier in the week when two key figures in delivering Science and Maths in education visited us on Monday 8th.
First, Dr. Jack Abramsky came along to look at aspects of our outstanding Maths provision, having had the College recommended to him by Anthony Tomei, the Director of the Nuffield Foundation who has also visited recently. Dr. Abramsky is an independent mathematics consultant and a member of the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education. He has been commissioned by the Nuffield Foundation, one of the UKs leading supporters of research and innovation, to conduct a study to inform the creation of resources for use in Maths subjects. He was extremely impressed by the ethos and ‘buzz’ in the Maths Department.
Later that day Yvonne Baker, Chief Executive of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network (STEMNET) dropped in to learn more about the work the we are doing to create opportunities to inspire young people to study the STEM subjects across Oldham and Greater Manchester. STEMNET links with all secondary schools across the UK, as well as primary schools and colleges, and their support for the Science Centre will help to provide experiences that go far beyond the classroom. After her visit Ms Baker described the College as “a remarkable place...a real STEM participation and attainment success story”.
