Seven students from the College’s English Extension Workshop visited the John Rylands Library in Manchester on 10th February with their tutor Debbie Brennan.  They were given a tour of the building by Glynis Platt, the Widening Participation Co-ordinator at the University of Manchester, and also had the chance to view displays of some of the texts in the collection.  Glynis is also arranging for the group to join the University Library over summer so they  can borrow books in preparation for the degree courses they’re planning to start in the future.

Extension Workshops are available in the majority of subjects at the College.  Their aim is to stretch students beyond the A Level specifications of the subject, which will help with university choices and encourage them to apply for universities that will challenge them and match their intellectual abilities.  The main focus of the English Extension Workshop is to read poetry and prose, from the 16th century to the present day, which students may have to study at university but which aren’t covered in the A Level course.  Students also give presentations on novels they have read and investigate movements such as Modernism and their effect on other cultural areas.
