First Soloist From The Royal Ballet Company Visits OSFC

Bennet Gartside, a First Soloist from the Royal Ballet Company, visited Oldham Sixth Form College on Tuesday 26th January to work with a group of A2 Dance students.

Bennet joined the Royal Ballet Company in 1987 and was promoted to First Artist in 2001.  He then progressed to become a Soloist in 2002 and a First Soloist in September 2007 and has danced an extensive range of roles (see details on www.roh.org.uk/)

Born in Lancaster, he first trained at the Sharon Harrison School of Dance.  Sharon (now Sharon Bell) is Course Leader for Dance at Oldham Sixth Form College.   Sharon said:   “We’re all very grateful to Bennet for giving up his time to come into College.  The opportunity to work with a dancer from such a prestigious company, and gain from his professional expertise, will be very beneficial to the whole group.”

Among the students Ben worked with is James Kay, who has just successfully auditioned for a place at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance.  Based in Leeds, the School is a unique dance training institution offering a select group of students – with exceptional dance potential – the opportunity to develop and excel as dance artists in a conservatoire environment.  James, who had  no formal dance training before joining OSFC is the first dance student from the College to be offered a place at this prestigious institution – one of the country’s top three dance conservatoires.
