Three Media and Film Students Win Coveted Places on BBC Mentor Scheme

OSFC Media and Film Students David Barker, Rebecca Warrior and Andrew Turner

OSFC students David Barker, Andrew Turner and Rebecca Warrior have won three of the nine available places on the BBC Mentor Scheme 2010.

Media and film students at the College have been lucky enough to win placements on the scheme since we became involved in 2001 (24 in total!). This year, five of our Aim Higher students applied. Four were chosen for interview out of 49 applicants and - after an intense interview and creative task at BBC North West along with 16 other hopefuls – three were chosen to participate in the project.

The Mentor Scheme aims to provide participants with the opportunity to test out their own ideas, learn about the BBC and develop new skills. They will have one-to-one mentoring with a member of BBC staff in Manchester, learn about different aspects of programme production, and complete a block of work experience to produce a TV, Radio or Multi-Media project.

Fiona Douglas-Reeves, Head of Media Studies said: “The Mentor Scheme is an excellent opportunity for students who are already passionate about broadcasting to develop their own initiative and creativity. It is invaluable experience for progression into the highly competitive world of the media. It allows them access to expert guidance from respected BBC employees and the chance to work under pressure to strict deadlines, a real insight into actual programme production. We are thrilled that once again our students have been awarded placements.”

Last year's placement James Pugh successfully completed the scheme in the summer. His Film and Radio work was showcased at BBC North West in September at an event hosted by Gordon Burns.
