36 AS Geography students and 7 A2 Geology students were involved in a recent residential fieldtrip to the Isle of Arran from Monday 2 November 2009 to Friday 6 November 2009.

All students were involved in primary fieldwork and data collection. This ranged from hydrological investigations at different sites along a river to examining Arran’s oldest rocks to deduce the geological history! All students were able to apply theory and gain a real importance and understanding of fieldwork techniques and their application. This was supported with input from specialised tutors from Lochranza Field Studies Centre. The visit provided a unique opportunity for the students to work in a very beautiful and stimulating environment within a protected area of international conservation and importance as the Isle of Arran has often been described as ‘Scotland in Miniature.’

Linda Mallon, Head of Earth Sciences at the College said, “Fieldwork is a vital component of both courses and the work offered the essential fieldwork requirements needed for enquiry based learning. The specialist support from the Field Studies Centre staff was fantastic and the students clearly developed their understanding and application of theory.”
