The OSFC Ladies Netball team has qualified for the final of the AoC Sport National Netball Cup, beating Queen Ethelburgas College 57-44 in a tense semi-final. It will be the second major final the team will feature in during April after also progressing to represent the college and the North West region at the AoC Sport National Championships 2016.
This excellent squad continues to add to a growing history of success for Netball at OSFC and it’s not the first time they have been aiming for glory in multiple competitions. Last year, many of the same players achieved an impressive double, lifting the AoC National Plate whilst remaining unbeaten to win the North West League. The team also reached the AoC National Championships finals, narrowly missing out as runners up during the 3-day tournament in Bath.
Back on their feet and standing tall again, our hardworking team fought off stiff competition from a college that boasts international experience. Queen Ethelburgas College recently became a Centre of Excellence for the Netball Superleague Club, Yorkshire Jets. They are directed by Melissa Hyndman, former National Head Coach of Wales, Superleague team Celtic Dragons, and the Fiji National team. Their team also features 3 girls who play professionally with Yorkshire Jets, 2 of which star nationally for England.
Kerry McDonald, course leader for Physical Education and Girls Netball coach said “what a fantastic win for the girls and an impressive result for the college. To put in a solid performance and hold out for the win against an opposition with bags of quality is incredibly rewarding. Their effort on court is a reflection of the confident spirit and togetherness we have here at OSFC.”
Finding the time to play regularly at a competitive level whilst studying a full time course can be a challenge and Kerry added that “we provide an abundance of opportunity to be involved in all levels of netball regularly throughout the year, timetabling it around student’s studies and providing catch up sessions to allow players to compete around the country.”
The ladies now have a big month ahead of them with the AoC National Finals taking place in Tyne and Wear from April 15 – April 17, before heading to the Derby Arena for the National Netball Cup final on April 26. Everyone at OSFC wishes them the very best of luck.
Stand tall and do yourself proud.
