On Tuesday the 9th of October, GCSE languages students from Blessed John Henry Newman RC College had the opportunity to attend a taster event at OSFC with information and activities relating to the study of A Levels in Spanish, French and German.

GCSE students were able to hear from the MFL team and from current A Level students about what it’s like studying a language at A Level, and also the world of opportunities and careers open to students who have studied languages to A Level and beyond. In addition, the University of Manchester languages ambassadors, Elete Nelson-Fearon and Peter Akindele, talked about their university courses in Spanish and Arabic, and Chinese and Japanese. They explained how they got there, how university courses in languages are structured, the main differences between school and college, the year abroad and societies within the university.

University of Manchester Language Ambassador Peter Akindele said, ‘I think these events are so important for encouraging students to consider languages at university – I wish I had something like that when I was at Sixth Form because it’s so easy to find information online but so important to learn more about the first-hand experience. This event was great because it touched on the practical benefits and real-life experiences.’
