Congratulations to our student Danny Wright who fought his way to the semi-finals of the Senior England Boxing Elite Championships at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, narrowly missing out on a place in the final.
Danny competed in the light welterweight 64kg division of the championships, the largest boxing tournament in England. To get there he had to train 6 days a week, up to twice a day for 13 weeks and, as an unseeded boxer, had to qualify for the national competition by winning the regional title. The seeded boxers are fighters who have been chosen by England to join the tournament at the quarter final stage.
Having won the final of the regionals on 29 March, Danny went on to the pre-quarter finals of the nationals on 11 April where he beat a previous national champion and England fighter to go on to the nationals. He was the youngest unseeded fighter to qualify from this stage. The national finals were held over 3 days, starting on 24th April with Danny’s semi –final taking place on 25th April.
Danny’s success means he will be invited onto GB training camps in the future and having gained more maturity and experience he’s going for gold in the tournament next year!
