Sociology

What is Sociology?
Many of you will not have studied Sociology before because it's not a subject that's usually available in schools. This is not a problem because Sociology is the study of society, and as you are a member of society this makes you qualified to have a go at it.

What sort of things do we look at in lessons?
In Sociology we look at issues that are fairly common to most people.
For example:

  • Why do working class pupils get worse results than middle class pupils?
  • Why do people commit crime?
  • Is it ok when doing research on people to observe them without telling them?
  • Why do women still do more housework and childcare than men?
  • Why are some people attracted to sects and cults?

What 'equipment' do you need to enjoy lessons?
To get the most out of Sociology, we'd like you to bring your opinions and experiences with you into the classroom to debate and discuss issues.

What do you need to know to do well in the exams?
Although your opinions and experiences are valuable tools, unfortunately they are not enough to pass the exam! To be successful you need to be able to write about sociological studies and theories, and learn how to criticise them.

What will you study on the course?
AS Sociology:

Three Units: Education, Families and Households and Research Methods

A2 Sociology:
Three Units: Religion, Crime and Deviance and a Coursework Project

To sum up then...why should you choose Sociology at OSFC?
....because it's something new and exciting! A lot of what we talk about will be familiar to you and will relate to your own experiences or opinions. This will help you to understand the subject better. Unlike some other subjects there is no right or wrong answer, just different points of view, some of which you'll find more convincing than others.
