Why Study Psychology?Psychology has a far reaching influence in all aspects of life. Any insights into human behaviour that can be gained through objective research must benefit society and individuals alike. Questions concerning the nature of aggression, mental illness, the purpose of sleep and dreaming, gender development, obedience to inhumane orders, and causes of stress are becoming increasingly important as modern life and global affairs continue to challenge us all.
The Psychology Department - is that largest single subject department in College with an expected eight hundred students starting in September 2007. Will I be able to read people's minds?
No. But you will have a deeper understanding of why people behave like they do in certain circumstances.
Does it matter that I didn't take Psychology at school?
No. Most of our students have never studied Psychology but that does not prevent them gaining some fantastic grades.
Psychology the science? I'm not very good at science. Should I still take it?
Yes. There is only a small mathematical element in the syllabus and we are used to teaching scientists and non scientists alike.
What use is Psychology?
It is a strong academic subject and will develop your literacy skills, research skills through coursework, and your critical skills.
Do many of your students go on to take Psychology degrees?
In 2006 forty dour students went on to take undergraduate level Psychology.
What do professional Psychologists do?
Roughly twenty percent of Psychology graduate go on to become professional Psychologists. There is a wide range of professions including Clinical Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Occupational Psychology, Educational Psychology, Research Psychology, Psychology Teaching and Lecturing. Many others successfully go into other related and non-related professions.
