PDF Biology

These courses provide an opportunity to gain a sound understanding of Biology through the study of fundamental biological principles. They are both very practical courses, involving lots of laboratory work. When combined with other necessary A Levels they can lead to careers and HE courses in areas such as Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Midwifery, Nursing, Dentistry and Teaching.

DNA Fingerprinting

Students have the opportunity to extract DNA and amplify it using the Polymerase Chain Reaction. They then carry out electrophoresis to gain a genetic fingerprint. The specialist micro-equipment and thermocycler are kindly loaned to us by the Biology department of the University of York.

Field trip to Ainsdale Sand Dunes

At the end of the summer term all A level Biology and Human Biology student have a day out at Ainsdale Sand Dunes to study succession and practice ecological techniques.
