them successful, Business Studies will interest you as it will develop
your knowledge of how businesses are organised, structured,
financed and operated. You will be encouraged to examine real
business situations, making use of a range of information sources
and personal research. You will cover topics such as: Marketing,
Finance, People in Organisations and Operations Management.

About the Course
Almost everyone will work in an organisation at some point in their
lives. These courses will look at some of the most important
questions vexing business managers. How to make more profit?
Lower prices or raise them? Where to cut costs? How to make
people work harder? How good is the Internet? Depending on the
level of the course you choose you’ll study a combination of the
following: Marketing, Human Resources, Finance, Leadership and
Management, Organisation of Business, Selling, Communication,
Accounting, Book-keeping, Business Ethics and Management
Decision Making. You will examine real case studies, work as part
of a team, carry out independent research and complete
assignments to get to the bottom of what makes a successful
business and why others fail. The course also includes features
such as a residential and visiting speakers.

Work Experience
As part of the course, all students on the BTEC Certificate take part in work placements. This will give you an invaluable insight in to the world of work and help you to complete your assignments. Work placements in the past have included places such as; Oldham Chronicle, Oldham Magistrates Courts, Accountants, Groundwork, Oldham Council, Solicitors and Estate Agents.
Chester Zoo Visit
The BTEC National Business students visited Chester Zoo in June 2008 to look at the success of the marketing department in raising visitor numbers and segmenting the visitor market. Of particular interest were the focus on grandparents as a lead into the lucrative family segment and the difficulties of selling the attraction to teenagers.

Morgan Visit
Students were delighted to visit the largest British owned motor manufacturing company turning out 8-9 cars a week but all hand made and really beautiful. A stark contrast in both methods and fortunes to Jaguar; Morgan are profitable with an 18 month waiting list.

Barcelona Visit
A group of Business Studies, Economics and Accounting students enjoyed a one-week residential to Barcelona in February. Relevant business visits included Barcelona Stock Exchange, Torres wineries and the Anis del Mono Distillery. During their free time in Spain’s second largest city, the students took the chance to visit famous sites such as the Nou Camp Stadium, La Sagrada Familia and Las Ramblas as well as time spent shopping and relaxing at the beach. No wonder it’s always a successful and popular trip!

About the Course
You will study the following modules: Exploring Business
Purposes, Developing Customer Relations, Investigating Financial
Control, Doing Business Online, Business Communication,
Starting A Small Business. You’ll use ICT techniques to write
reports, organise presentations and create websites.

A good foundation for AS Levels and BTEC National Courses in
Business and Tourism and Applied AS Levels in ICT and Leisure.

BTEC National Business or Travel and Tourism or other relevant
vocational route.
