Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974
This Act places a duty on all employers to safeguard so far as is reasonably practicable the health, safety and welfare of all their employees. In addition to this, duties extend to cover the health and safety of persons not employed but who may be affected by the work activities undertaken such as students, visitors, contractors etc.Health and Safety Policy 2016
Statement of General Policy
Oldham Sixth Form College accepts its responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and all subsequent regulations. It is the policy of the College that is operations shall be conducted in such a manner as to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of employees and any other persons who may be affected by its activities, including students, contractors, visitors and members of the public.
It is recognised and accepted that there is a direct relationship between a safe working environment and an efficient and well-run College. The College requires, therefore, that a high standard of safety be achieved and maintained across the College site and throughout all its activities.
Whilst a statutory duty exists to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and all subsequent and relevant legislation pertaining thereto, this shall be regarded as the minimum standard expected.
In order to meet these objectives the Governing body, delegated to the Principal and the Senior Leadership Team, will provide:
- A safe working environment;
- Safe working practices;
- Suitable and sufficient information and training;
- Effective emergency procedures.
Every individual, staff or College user has a personal responsibility to take all reasonable precautions and provide their co-operation, to ensure their own safety and that of others. There will be joint consultation between the College and its staff and students via the Health and Safety Committee. The College will provide both adequate resources, and also suitable and sufficient health and safety training. This policy will be brought to the attention of, and/or issued to all members of staff on induction and annual refresher.The Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed on an annual basis.
